Overview
This document summarizes how can realize most of the
benefits of the Summit WM features using Altitude 300
access point (part numbers 15700, 15701, 15702, 15703,
15706, 15707) installed in their facilities. It also outlines the
factors to be considered by the user when migrating to the
Summit WM WLAN switch and the migration procedure.
Supported Countries
Altitude 300 is approved to be used with Summit WM in the
following countries (NOTE: For the most current listing,
please see the approved list of Altitude 300/Altitude 350
countries that is updated monthly in the Extreme Networks
price list):
Argentina
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Canada
China
Columbia
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Altitude 300 currently cannot be used with Summit WM
in the following countries: Brazil, India, Singapore,
South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
Functionality Differences
There are two perspectives to consider with regard to the
functionality:
When using Altitude 300 with Summit WM, customers
gain many new capabilities compared to using the
Altitude 300 with ExtremeWare
®
wireless switches.
Some of these include:
Multiple SSIDs (8 per radio, 16 per AP)
Access Domain support
Layer 3 roaming across Summit WM controllers
Branch office mode
All of the security features found on Altitude 350
Redundancy and availability features offered by the
Summit WM
QoS capabilities (such as SVP and 802.11e WMM)
Rogue AP detection
Management, reporting, and SNMP MIB support of
Summit WM
PLEASE NOTE: When using Altitude 300 with
Summit WM, customers will not be able to use the
Dynamic Radio Management provided by the integrated
AutoCell
®
capability.
The AutoCell automatic channel selection and dynamic
RF management are NOT supported with Altitude 300/
Summit WM
Summit WM natively provides automatic channel
selection—this is available with the Altitude 300/
Summit WM
When transitioning Altitude 300 to Summit WM, custom-
ers will see the following differences compared to using
the Altitude 300 with ExtremeWare wireless switches:
ExtremeWare wireless switches are an extension of
the Layer 2 network, supporting VLANs. Summit WM
operates as a router at Layer 3, creating a separate
Layer 3 network for the wireless clients.
ExtremeWare switches support VLANs, which
Summit WM does not currently support
1
. However,
specific traffic (such as guest users) can be routed to
specific destinations (such as outside of the firewall in
order to isolate it from corporate traffic).
EPICenter
®
can “see” the individual Altitude 300s
when they are operating with an ExtremeWare
wireless switch. EPICenter can “see” the Summit WM
switch, but not the individual APs that are operating
with it. (This would be true of any third-party
management product, such as HP Openview.)
EPICenter would recognize any Altitude 300/Altitude 350
problems because it would receive traps from Summit WM.
