6.3 Configuring the RADIUS Client
The RADIUS client is the device in an authentication exchange that processes the
connection requests received from the supplicant. The RADIUS server accepts or rejects
the user based on credentials provided in the access request frame. For the purposes of this
implementation guide, the WM3400 controller acts as the RADIUS client.
As an added security measure, the RADIUS server usually requires prior knowledge of a
RADIUS client. This allows the server to differentiate clients it communicates with and
prevents abuse (i.e. “rogue” RADIUS clients). Additionally, both the RADIUS client and
server must be configured with the same shared secret key. The procedure below
documents how to add a RADIUS client (e.g. WM3400 controller) into the RADIUS server
(e.g. Windows Server 2008).
1) In the Server manager console, open Roles -> Network Policy and Access Services ->
NPS (local) -> RADIUS Clients and Services. Right click on “RADIUS Clients” and
select “New”:
